Wu Dao's 2nd Annual Wu Dao Traditional Kung Fu Competition - April 7, 2012

Wu Dao is excited to announce that we will be hosting our second annual Open Traditional Kung Fu competition on April 7, 2012. Many competitors from Massachusetts based Kung Fu schools will be participating. We invite you to join us as a competitor or spectator.

Competition Overview

Competing in forms and sparring is a time-honored tradition in martial arts. The demonstration of martial prowess through forms and testing ones skills against others through sparring has been a key part of martial arts training for thousands of years. It is the goal of the Wu Dao Competition to provide a positive environment to help students experience this part of their martial arts training and to help promote the practice of traditional Kung Fu.

Age Groups, Skill Levels and Divisions Overview

Skill level criteria

  • Novice: 1 Year or less experience
  • Beginner: Between 1 and 2 years of experience
  • Intermediate: Between 2 and 4 years of experience
  • Advanced: More than 4 years of experience
  • Students who wish to compete at levels higher than their experience dictates, may do so with the approval of their instructor.

Forms Forms competition includes all weapon and hand demonstrations that are performed in front of the judges and awarded scores based on Traditional Chinese martial arts criteria. Only Traditional Chinese martial arts forms are allowed at the Wu Dao competition. This excludes all Japanese and Korean styles. This also excludes Contemporary Wu Shu and other contemporary mixed styles such as Kempo Karate.

Point Sparring - (Junior and Teen Divisions) Each student will fight three, two-minute matches. Each match will be against a different opponent. Each time the judge calls break, the clock will be stopped and the three judges will call either black or red and a point will be awarded accordingly. One point will be awarded for contact to any of the legal targets. In addition to scoring points during the match, students that win their matches will be awarded five additional points. After all matches have been completed, the student with the most points will win their division.

If there are an uneven number of students, causing a situation where some students must fight four matches, an average of points from their third and fourth matches will be taken. If the student fighting four matches wins both the third and fourth matches, they will still only receive five additional bonus points.

Continuous Sparring - (Adult Divisions) Continuous sparring is an elimination style competition. Students that successfully win their match will move on in the elimination.

Each sparring match will consist of three, two-minute rounds. The winner of a round will be determined based on the scoring from three judges. The first competitor to win two out of three rounds wins the match. If a competitor wins the first two rounds, the match will not continue to the third round.

Upon a successful kick to an opponents head the judges will call break and the student performing the kick will be awarded a point. This rule has been added to more accurately simulate the effect of a kick to the head. In a fighting situation a kick to the head is almost never grabbed and the person being kicked will be stunned.

Push Hands for Children - (Children Divisions) Children Push Hands done on slightly elevated posts (2.5 inches), which are on top of a padded floor. This competition provides the opportunity for young competitors to test their balance, structure and control in a safe and competitive environment. Similar to the scoring in Point Sparring, each student will get to push against three different competitors.

Points will be awarded by pushing an opponent off of their poles, while maintaining balance and control. At the end of three matches, the competitors with the most points will be awarded Gold, DSilver and Bronze medals.
